Niku Tofu

Who said tofu can’t be packed with flavor?

What You Need

Ingredients (1–2 servings):

  • Firm tofu (or your preferred kind!)

  • Sliced beef

  • Half an onion, thinly sliced

  • Grated garlic

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp mirin

  • 2.5 tbsp soy sauce

  • Pinch of dashi powder (I like Hondashi!)

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/2 cup water (add up to 3/4 cup more if you want to dilute the flavor)

Let’s Cook!

Video

  1. Cube your tofu and thinly slice the onion.

  2. In a cold pot, mix sugar + a splash of water. Turn heat to low and stir — it’ll start bubbling and lightly caramelize (don’t let it go too far!).

  3. Add mirin and stir for 30 sec.

  4. Add soy sauce + water and stir.

  5. Add onions — if you want them soft, simmer them first before adding beef. If you like a little crunch, add beef at the same time.

  6. Add tofu, gently spoon sauce over it for a minute. Done!

Tips

Let it sit on the stove a bit — the tofu soaks up more flavor over time, and it actually tastes better later. I always make extra for leftovers
